For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder... Isaiah 9:2 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined. Darkness is an (expression) for depression and death… Some scholars interpret this passage “dwellers in a land as dark as death” - G.M. Tucker (The Book of Isaiah). John 8:12 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” “He’s not a baby in a manger anymore, he’s not a broken man on a cross. He didn’t stay in the grave and he’s not staying in heaven forever. He’s alive.” - Misty Edwards “Some scholars have seen the poem as part of the coronation ritual for a particular Judean king, most commonly identified as Hezekiah in 727 bce” G.M. Tucker (The Book of Isaiah). 2 Chronicles 32:25 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) But Hezekiah did not respond according to the benefit done to him, for his heart was proud. Therefore wrath came upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem. Isaiah 9:1 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. Matthew 3:13 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. Matthew 4:12-17 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) 12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:15 “Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— 16 the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” 17 From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” Isaiah 9:6-7a New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority (the government) rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace… Authority/Government: domination… Dominion Domination: "to rule, have dominion over," from dominus , literally "master of the house," Isaiah 9:4-5 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulder, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire. Acts 10:38 The Message (MSG) “You know the story of what happened in Judea…. Jesus arrived from Nazareth, anointed by God with the Holy Spirit, ready for action. He went through the country helping people and healing everyone who was beaten down by the Devil. He was able to do all this because God was with him. Matthew 11:28-30 The Message (MSG) “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Comments are closed.
